Johnny Carson also used several regular guest hosts in the 1980s. These included Joey Bishop, David Letterman, and Joan Rivers. Eventually, Jay Leno became Carson's final regular guest host. Modern hosts like Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon mostly stopped using guest hosts. They often prefer to air reruns instead of featuring potential rivals.

The history of the program began with Steve Allen in 1954. It originally started as a local New York program called The Knickerbocker Beer Show.

It was soon retitled The Steve Allen Show before becoming Tonight! on the national network. In 1957, NBC briefly changed the format to a news-style show. It was renamed Tonight! America After Dark and hosted by Jack Lescoulie and Al Collins. This version was unpopular and many affiliates stopped airing it. Jack Paar eventually returned the program to its successful talk and variety roots.
