He moved away from traditional interview styles to include quirky, genre-mocking segments. These segments became famous staples of his programs. For example, he featured "Stupid Pet Tricks" and "Stupid Human Tricks" to entertain audiences. He also utilized a "Top 10 List" and performed experiments, such as dropping objects off a five-story building roof. He even used a "Monkey-Cam" and a camera mounted on his dog, Bob, to provide unique perspectives. These creative choices helped him build a massive, loyal following.

His path to stardom began in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was born in 1947.

Letterman's professional life started in local radio and television. He worked as an announcer and a weatherman for stations like WNTS and WLWI. His talent eventually led him to become a regular guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Carson became a vital mentor to Letterman. This relationship was crucial, as Letterman's dry humor caught the attention of national scouts. He eventually hosted his own morning comedy show on NBC in 1980, which won two Emmy Awards.
