He is widely recognized for his dry wit and his focus on awkward social situations. His work often explores brutally honest perspectives on everyday life. Through his various projects, he has earned significant industry recognition. He has received two Primetime Emmy Awards for his contributions to comedy. He also won the Writers Guild of America's Laurel Award in 2010. His career spans many different formats, including stand-up, television, film, and Broadway.

David's journey began in the realm of stand-up comedy. During his early years, he held several different jobs to support himself. He worked as a store clerk, a limousine driver, and a historian.

He also lived in a subsidized housing complex in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen. This apartment was located across the hall from Kenny Kramer. Kramer later served as the inspiration for the character Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld. David eventually transitioned into television writing. He worked on the ABC show Fridays from 1980 to 1982. He also served as a writer for NBC's Saturday Night Live between 1984 and 1985.

His major breakthrough occurred through the creation of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld. In 1989, David teamed up with Jerry Seinfeld to create a pilot called The Seinfeld Chronicles. This show eventually became Seinfeld, a massive success in television history. David wrote 62 episodes for the series during its run from 1989 to 1998. He won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1992 for writing the episode "The Contest." This specific episode was ranked number one on TV Guide's list of the top 100 episodes. David was also the primary inspiration for the character George Costanza. He occasionally made uncredited appearances on the show as well.

Following Seinfeld, David created the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2000. This series uses a unique method of production called improvisation. Instead of following a strict script, actors improvise their dialogue. They do so based on a story outline that is only a few pages long. David writes these outlines and provides direction for the performers. The show features a fictionalized version of David himself. This character lacks social awareness and often experiences social faux pas. These awkward incidents are so recognizable that they created the term "Larry David moment" in popular culture.

David's career also includes significant work in film and on the stage. He has acted in three films directed by Woody Allen, including Radio Days in 1987. In 2013, he wrote and starred in the HBO movie Clear History. He also made his Broadway debut in 2015 with the play Fish in the Dark. David wrote and starred in this comedic production. The play centered on the death of a family patriarch. Before it closed, the play's advance sales reached $13.5 million. This amount broke previous records for a Broadway show.

There are several surprising connections within David's personal and professional life. He has made frequent guest appearances on Saturday Night Live since 2015. In these roles, he often impersonates the U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Genealogical research conducted by PBS's Finding Your Roots revealed a family connection. David and Sanders are actually sixth cousins once removed. David has also collaborated with many famous comedians. Regular guest stars on his shows have included Richard Lewis, Wanda Sykes, and Bob Einstein. These connections have helped shape his place in the comedy community.

Today, David continues to influence the landscape of television comedy. In July 2025, he announced a new sketch comedy series for HBO. This project focuses on overlooked figures and absurd moments in United States history. He is co-writing and executive producing this series with Jeff Schaffer. The production is a collaboration with Higher Ground Productions, owned by Barack and Michelle Obama. This new work shows his ongoing interest in exploring the complexities of human behavior and history. His career remains a significant part of modern American entertainment.
