He is most famous for creating the Garfield comic strip. This strip is one of the most widely syndicated comics in the world. Davis has built a massive entertainment empire through his creative work. He manages his characters through his own company, Paws, Inc. This company handles the worldwide licensing and syndication of his art. His work connects the worlds of visual art, business, and mass media.

Davis's creative process has evolved significantly over several decades. For many years, he produced his comics using traditional hand-painting methods. In 2011, he transitioned to digital art using a graphics tablet. This shift changed how he created his daily drawings. Before this change, he kept his hand-painted comics in a climate-controlled safe. In 2019, he decided to auction over 11,000 of these original strips. These auctions included hand-drawn works created between 1978 and 2011.

Before Garfield became a global success, Davis worked on several smaller projects. In 1969, he assisted on the comic strip Tumbleweeds. He later created a weekly strip called Gnorm Gnat from 1973 to 1975. An editor once told him that people could not relate to bugs. This feedback influenced his next steps in the industry. Davis began studying successful comic strips to find a better subject. He noticed that animals like Snoopy were very successful in the Peanuts strip. He decided to create a cat as his main character.

His first major series began in January 1976. It was originally titled Jon and published in The Pendleton Times. The strip featured a young bachelor named Jon Arbuckle and his cat, Garfield.

As the cat became more popular, Davis renamed the strip Garfield on September 1, 1977. On June 19, 1978, the strip began national syndication in 41 newspapers. This marked the start of Garfield's massive growth in popularity. Davis also launched a barnyard strip called U.S. Acres in 1986.

Davis's career includes significant work in television and animation. He wrote or co-wrote all the Garfield TV specials for CBS between 1982 and 1991. He also produced the series Garfield and Friends, which aired from 1988 to 1994. Davis served as an executive producer for several CGI animated projects. These include direct-to-video films and the television series The Garfield Show. His influence even reached into the world of toys. Between 2000 and 2003, he created a comic strip based on Mr. Potato Head.

The scale of Davis's success is reflected in impressive numbers. By 2008, Garfield appeared in 2,580 newspapers. It reached an estimated 300 million readers every single day. To manage this work, he founded Paws, Inc. in 1981. This company employs nearly 50 artists and licensing administrators. In 2019, Davis sold Paws, Inc. to the media conglomerate Viacom. This company later merged to become Paramount Global. His work has earned many prestigious honors, including several Emmy Awards.

Davis's personal history often mirrors the stories he tells. He grew up on a Black Angus cattle farm in Fairmount, Indiana.

This upbringing is very similar to the life of Jon Arbuckle. Jon was also raised on a farm with his parents and brother. Davis studied art and business at Ball State University. While studying there, he was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He also served as the Art Editor for his high school newspaper, The Breeze. Later in life, he returned to Ball State as an adjunct professor to teach about the comics industry.
