He is best known for creating the Clifford the Big Red Dog book series. This series has become a major part of children's literature worldwide. Bridwell used his skills in both writing and illustration to bring his characters to life. His work helped define a specific style of storytelling for young readers. Through his drawings and words, he created worlds that children could easily imagine and enjoy.

Bridwell's professional journey began with significant challenges in the art world. After studying art at several institutions, he worked as a freelance commercial artist in New York City. During this time, he struggled to provide for his wife and young daughter. In 1962, he attempted to transition into children's book illustration by organizing a professional portfolio. However, his efforts were met with difficulty at first. Approximately fifteen different publishing houses rejected his work. This period of rejection highlights how difficult it can be to find success in creative industries.

A turning point occurred during his interactions with the publisher Harper & Row. An editor there reviewed his work and made a unique suggestion. The editor believed that Bridwell's illustrations were not strong enough to be sold as standalone art. Instead, the editor suggested that Bridwell transform one of his drawings into a complete story. The specific drawing chosen featured a young girl and a bloodhound the size of a horse. This creative pivot led directly to the creation of Clifford the Big Red Dog.

The Clifford series grew into a massive cultural phenomenon. The first book was published in 1963 and immediately changed Bridwell's career. Since then, the franchise has expanded to include over 75 different Clifford titles. Not all of these books were written by Bridwell himself, but the character remains his legacy. The series has also been adapted into three different animated television series. Additionally, Clifford has appeared in a live-action film and a live musical production. The character is so iconic that he serves as the official mascot for the publisher Scholastic.

Bridwell also demonstrated an ability to create successful characters through spontaneous creativity. In 1965, he published The Witch Next Door, which became one of his most popular works. Interestingly, Bridwell had only completed the drawings and the concept the night before his meeting with his editor. He had originally intended to show his editor only a small amount of extra content. Instead, the new concept proved so successful that it resulted in a series of six books. Other notable works by Bridwell include The Zany Zoo, published in 1963, and A Tiny Family, published in 1974.

The scale of Bridwell's impact is visible in the global reach of his books. There are currently over 126 million copies of his books in print. These stories have been translated and are available in 13 different languages. This massive number shows how deeply his characters resonated across different cultures and borders. His ability to combine simple, engaging art with relatable stories allowed his work to reach a vast, international audience of young readers.

Bridwell's personal life was closely tied to his artistic roots and his family. He was born on February 15, 1928, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Leona and Vern Bridwell. He married Norma Ellen Howard in 1958 after a three-year courtship. Their connection was noted by a colleague who saw that they shared many similarities, including being commercial artists from Indiana. The couple had two children, Emily Elizabeth Merz and Tim. In 1969, the family moved to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, where they resided in Edgartown for many years.

Norman Bridwell passed away at Martha's Vineyard Hospital on December 12, 2014. He was 86 years old at the time of his death. His death followed a three-week hospital stay after he suffered a fall at his home. The cause of death was prostate cancer. His funeral was held at the Federated Church in Edgartown, and he was cremated. His life serves as a testament to how persistence and a single creative idea can shape the childhoods of millions of people around the world.
