He was born in Indiana in 1928. He loved to draw and write. But he did not always think he was good at it. He even went to art school to learn more.

In New York, Bridwell worked to make money for his family. He tried to find work making books for kids. About fifteen companies said no to him. Then, an editor had a new idea. The editor saw a drawing Bridwell made. It showed a girl and a huge dog. This dog became Clifford the Big Red Dog. The first book came out in 1963. Clifford is now a mascot for a company called Scholastic. There are many Clifford books and TV shows.

Bridwell also wrote about a witch. He made the book The Witch Next Door very fast. He only worked on it one night! It became very popular. His books are in 13 different languages. Over 126 million copies are in print. Bridwell lived on Martha's Vineyard for many years. He died in 2014 at age 86.
