Making these comics has changed over many years. For a long time, Davis drew everything by hand. In 2011, he started using a digital graphics tablet instead. This was a big change in his way of working. Before this, he made many hand-painted comics. He kept those older drawings in a safe that controls the air. In 2019, he held auctions for over 11,000 of those hand-drawn strips. This helped people find and own his early art.

Davis grew up on a cattle farm in Fairmount, Indiana.

His life on the farm was like the life of Jon Arbuckle. Jon is the character who owns Garfield in the comics. Davis studied art and business at Ball State University. While he was a student, he joined a group called the Theta Xi fraternity. He even worked on his high school newspaper. He was the Art Editor for The Breeze in 1959.

His career began with smaller projects before Garfield became huge. He worked on a strip called Tumbleweeds in 1969. Later, he made a strip called Gnorm Gnat. An editor once told him that people might not relate to bugs. Davis learned from this and studied other famous comics. He noticed that animals like Snoopy were very popular. He decided to make a cat his main character. He first published a strip called Jon in 1976. On September 1, 1977, he renamed it Garfield.

By 1978, Garfield was appearing in 41 different newspapers. By 2008, it was in 2,580 newspapers around the world. Every day, 300 million people read his funny stories. Davis also founded a company called Paws, Inc. in 1981 to manage his work. This company employs nearly 50 artists and staff members. He even started the Professor Garfield Foundation to help children learn to read. His work connects art, business, and storytelling together.
