Garfield is a famous American comic strip created by Jim Davis.

It follows the lives of three main characters: Garfield the cat, Odie the dog, and their owner, Jon Arbuckle. Garfield is a large, orange tabby cat who is known for being lazy and hungry. He especially loves eating lasagna. Most of the stories focus on how these three characters interact with each other. Their different personalities often lead to funny moments. This simple idea helped the strip become a huge success around the world.

The strip works by showing short, funny scenes in a series of panels.

Over many years, the way the characters look has changed. In the beginning, Garfield had small, squinty eyes. Later, he was redesigned to look more cartoonish. He began walking on his hind legs and looked a bit slimmer. Jim Davis said these changes made it easier for the characters to do things, like reach for a piece of pie. Today, Davis still writes the stories and makes rough sketches. Assistants like Brett Koth and Gary Barker help finish the art.

Jim Davis started creating these characters in the mid-1970s. He first published a strip called "Jon" in 1976 in a local Indiana newspaper.

He changed the name to "Garfield" in 1977. Davis decided to use a cat because he noticed there were not many famous cat characters in comics at that time. He based Garfield's personality on his own grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis. In 1978, the strip began appearing in newspapers across the whole country. It quickly grew from a local comic into a global phenomenon.

Garfield has reached many amazing milestones in its history. By 1981, the strip was in 850 newspapers. By 2004, it appeared in nearly 2,600 newspapers in 111 different countries.

It even held a Guinness World Record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip. The characters are also very popular in stores. They have been used for toys, clothes, and video games. Some of these items earn between $750 million and $1 billion every year. This shows how much people enjoy the world Davis created.

Because Garfield is so famous, you can find him in many different places. He has been in many television shows on networks like CBS. There are also movies where Garfield is brought to life using computers.

Jim Davis also changed how comic books are made. He created the "Garfield format," which uses books that are shaped like newspaper strips. This new way of making books helped other comic collections become popular too. Whether in a newspaper, a book, or on a screen, Garfield remains a beloved character.
