It tells stories about mischief and funny trouble. The name "Katzenjammer" comes from a German word for the wailing of cats. The strip is special because it is the longest-running comic ever. It has been shared with readers for over a hundred years. People all over the world still enjoy these stories today. Even in Norway and Denmark, it is a beloved tradition.

The stories usually focus on two twin brothers named Hans and Fritz. These boys are very naughty and love to play pranks. They often trick a sailor known as der Captain. They also play tricks on a school official called der Inspector.

Sometimes the boys even trick their mother, Mama. The characters often speak with German accents in the early stories. They might go on treasure hunts or visit a tropical island called Squee-Jee.

This comic strip began in 1897. It was created by an artist named Rudolph Dirks. Dirks was born in Heide, Germany, but moved to Chicago when he was seven. The strip first appeared in the New York Journal.

Later, an artist named Harold Knerr drew it for 35 years. He started his work in 1914 and continued until 1949. A long legal fight happened between 1912 and 1914. This fight was between Dirks and the Hearst newspaper company.

Because of that legal fight, two different strips existed at once. Dirks started a new strip called The Captain and the Kids in 1914. It used the same characters but had a different drawing style.

One strip was drawn by Knerr, while the other was by Dirks. The two versions competed with each other for many decades. The Captain and the Kids finally ended its run in 1979. The Katzenjammer Kids published its last original strip in 2006.

These characters have moved from paper to many other places. They appeared in silent movies in 1898 and 1900.

Many animated cartoons were also made about them. In Norway, people have published a Katzenjammer comic book almost every Christmas since 1911. The strip is even on American postage stamps. It has inspired many other artists and even some musical groups. It remains a huge part of comic history.
