Ignatz is a short-tempered mouse. He constantly tries to throw bricks at Krazy's head. Krazy does not get angry at the bricks. Instead, Krazy thinks the bricks are signs of love. Krazy often says sweet things like "Li'l ainjil" to the mouse. A dog named Officer Bull Pupp tries to keep order. He often stops Ignatz and puts him in jail.

George Herriman built this world over many years. He first used these characters in an earlier strip. That strip was called The Dingbat Family. Later, he made them appear in a strip called Baron Bean. The name "Krazy Kat" actually came from a mouse in those early stories. The strip first appeared in the New York Evening Journal. A man named William Randolph Hearst helped the strip succeed. He was a major supporter of Herriman's work. This helped the comic stay in newspapers for many years.

The art in the strip is very creative. Herriman used many different styles in his drawings. He showed clay-shingled roofs and trees in decorative pots. These pots looked like Navajo art. He also included parts of Mexican-American culture. The backgrounds often change between every single panel. This makes the world feel like it is moving. Sometimes, he even used theater curtains to frame the pictures. He also used strange shapes for the comic panels. This made the pages look very interesting to read.

Many smart people praised the strip as serious art. An art critic named Gilbert Seldes loved it in 1924. He called it the most fantastic work of art in America. The poet E. E. Cummings also wrote about it. These reviews helped make the strip very famous. Even though it was a modest success at first, it changed comics forever. Many modern cartoonists still look at his work today. It shows how simple ideas can become great art.
