Ub Iwerks was a brilliant artist and inventor. He was a master of animation, which is the art of making drawings look like they are moving. He was also a director, a producer, and a maker of special effects. People remember him most for his early work with Walt Disney. Together, they helped create some of the most famous characters in history. Iwerks was a key part of making animation a true art form.

Iwerks had a very special way of working with drawings. He often took a rough sketch and turned it into a finished character. For example, he helped turn a simple drawing into the famous Mickey Mouse. He did not just design the characters, though. He also did the hard work of animating them. This means he drew the many individual pictures needed to show movement. He animated many early films like the Silly Symphony series.

His journey began in Kansas City, Missouri. He met Walt Disney there in 1919 at an art studio. They started by working as illustrators for a local newspaper company. In 1922, Iwerks became the chief animator for the Laugh-O-Gram cartoon series. When that studio ran out of money, he moved to Los Angeles in 1923. There, he worked on the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. These early years helped build the foundation for his long career.

Iwerks was also a talented inventor who loved machines. He wanted to find faster ways to do his work. He once attached a motor to an animation camera. This allowed one person to operate the camera and change the drawings alone. Later, he worked on special visual effects for many big movies. He even helped create technical solutions for Disneyland and the 1964 World's Fair. He used a process called xerography to copy drawings onto animation cels.

His life was full of both great success and big changes. He left Disney in 1930 to start his own studio. He created characters like Flip the Frog during this time. After a few years, he returned to work at Disney in 1940. He won two Academy Awards for his amazing skills in film. In 1989, he was named a Disney Legend to honor his work. Today, many people still call him one of the greatest animators ever.
