While the two mice appeared in other tests earlier, this was their first big show. The film is loved for its technical skill and its fun characters. It is often called one of the most influential cartoons ever made.

The story follows Mickey Mouse as he pilots a paddle steamer boat.

He meets a captain named Pete, who is a villain. Mickey and Minnie Mouse have a very musical time on the boat. Mickey even uses farm animals to create sounds and songs. He uses a goat like a tool to play musical notes. He also uses a cow's teeth and tongue like a xylophone. This clever way of making music makes the cartoon very special.

Walt Disney wanted to make a cartoon with synchronized sound. This means the noises and music match the moves on the screen.

He was inspired to try this after watching a film called The Jazz Singer in 1927. To make the sound work, the team used a click track. This helped the musicians stay on the beat. They used the Cinephone system to help record the sounds. This was a big step forward for how movies were made.

Making the film was not always easy for the creators.

The first attempt to sync the sound was actually a disaster. Walt Disney even had to sell his Moon roadster to pay for a second recording. The music included the song "Turkey in the Straw" and "Steamboat Bill." Wilfred Jackson and Bert Lewis helped arrange the music. The Green Brothers Novelty Band also performed for the final soundtrack. These details helped make the film a huge success.

Steamboat Willie became a massive hit all over the world. It premiered at Universal's Colony Theater in New York City on November 18, 1928.

Because it was so good, the United States Library of Congress chose it for preservation. This means they keep it safe in the National Film Registry. Animators even voted it the 13th-greatest cartoon of all time in 1994. It is a piece of history that people still study today.
