The Jazz Singer is a famous movie from 1927.

It is a musical drama that changed how movies were made. This film is a "part-talkie," which means it was one of the first long movies to use recorded music and speech. Most movies back then were silent. This film used a special system called Vitaphone to play sound on discs. This new way of making movies helped end the silent film era. It showed the world that audiences loved hearing actors speak and sing.

The movie was based on a play by Samson Raphaelson. Raphaelson was inspired by seeing a singer named Al Jolson perform in 1917. He noticed how Jolson could move between being very serious and very energetic. Raphaelson first wrote a short story called "The Day of Atonement." He later turned that story into a stage play. The play became a huge hit at the Warner Theatre in 1925. Warner Bros. Pictures eventually bought the rights to make it into a movie.

The movie stars Mary Dale, played by May McAvoy, as a dancer. Darryl F. Zanuck won an Academy Honorary Award for his work as a producer. Another man, Alfred A. Cohn, was even nominated for an award for his writing.
