Silent film

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Silent films are movies made without recorded voices or dialogue. Even though they do not have talking, they tell amazing stories. Filmmakers use visual details to show how characters feel. They also use intertitles to help the audience. These are cards shown on the screen with words. They might show a key line of dialogue. They can also explain where the story is happening.

Watching a silent film was a very lively experience. These movies were almost never truly quiet during a show. A musician would play live music to match the action. In small towns, a pianist might play for the crowd. Large city theaters often had a theater organist. Some big organs, like the Mighty Wurlitzer, were very special. They could make sounds like bird whistles or train whistles. They could even mimic the sound of galloping horses.

Moving pictures began to grow in the late 1800s. One of the earliest films is the Roundhay Garden Scene from 1888. It is only about two seconds long. In 1893, Thomas Edison introduced the kinetoscope to view films. Later, the silent era became very successful from 1894 to 1929. This time was full of new artistic ideas. Many styles of modern movies started during this period.

Many people think all silent films were black and white. However, color was actually very common back then. By the early 1920s, about 80 percent of movies had color. People used dyes to tint the film or hand-colored it. They also used processes like Technicolor to add color.

Silent films changed forever when sound technology improved. In 1927, a film called The Jazz Singer arrived. This was one of the first "talkies," or talking pictures. New tools like the Vitaphone system made sound practical. This ended the era of the silent film for most people. Still, some movies like City Lights use only music. These films show that silent storytelling is still very powerful.
