Soundtrack

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A soundtrack is the audio that goes with a story. It can be for a movie, a radio show, or a video game. This sound matches the images you see on a screen. In a film, sounds often start on separate tracks. One track has the talking, one has sound effects, and one has music. Workers mix these together into one composite track. This is the final sound that the audience hears.

Sometimes, people want to listen to this music at home. They buy a soundtrack album to hear their favorite parts again. These albums are often just the music from the film. They do not usually have the talking or the sound effects. Some albums are called film scores. A film score uses instruments to play themes. For example, the music in the Star Wars series is a famous film score. Other albums might have pop songs used in the background of a movie.

Making these albums has changed a lot over time. In 1937, the Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had the first commercial soundtrack. It was released on 78 rpm discs in early 1938. Later, in 1946, the film Till the Clouds Roll By had the first live-action musical soundtrack. Back then, people did not have tape to record on. Producers had to copy sounds from one disc to another. They added transitions to make the music flow. This process could make the sound quality lower than the original.

There are many different kinds of recordings you can find. Musical film soundtracks focus on songs, like in the movie Grease. Video game soundtracks are also very common now. They include music from levels, menus, and title screens. Some games, like Final Fantasy VII, have very popular music. Sometimes, an album might even include the dialogue from the film. A few rare albums, like the one for Romeo and Juliet, include many parts of the movie's talking.

Soundtracks help tell a story through sound. They can make a romance feel sweet or a thriller feel scary. Some soundtracks even include new songs that were not in the movie. These are used to help promote the film to new fans. Many soundtracks can win big awards like Grammys. Composers like Henry Mancini became very famous for their work. His music for Peter Gunn won him two Grammys. Soundtracks connect the music we love to the stories we enjoy.
