Video game music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Video game music is the soundtrack that brings digital worlds to life. It plays during title screens, menus, and while you are playing. Sometimes, the music is smart and changes based on what you do. It might speed up to show danger or play a happy tune when you win.

This music can be original or use songs that are already public domain. Because people love these sounds, soundtracks are now sold as albums. You can even hear video game music performed in big concert halls.

In the early days, making music for games was a hard job. Computers used special chips to turn code into sounds. These chips were often limited in what they could do. For example, the Atari 2600 could only play two tones at once. This led to a special style called chiptune. Chiptune uses the unique sounds of these early electronic chips.

History shows how quickly these sounds grew and changed. In 1978, the game Space Invaders used four repeating notes that looped. By 1980, Rally-X became the first game with a melodic background tune. Later, the game Frogger used eleven different tracks that changed with your actions. In 1982, the game Dig Dug was special because the music stopped when you stopped moving.

New technology like FM synthesis changed how music felt. This method, used by Yamaha, made sounds feel warm and pleasant. Some computers, like the Amiga in 1985, used a method called sampling. Sampling is when a computer plays back a short clip of a real sound. This allowed games to sound more like real instruments. However, samples used a lot of memory, which was very expensive back then.

Many famous composers helped make video game music a respected art. Koji Kondo is well known for his work on Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. Other great names include Nobuo Uematsu and Yuzo Koshiro. These musicians turned simple computer beeps into catchy, complex songs. Today, their work is still highly regarded by many people around the world.
