He is a black cat with white eyes and a very large grin. Felix was a star during the silent film era. He was also the first animal character to become a recurring star in American animation. People loved him so much that he appeared on many things.

You could find his face on toys, ceramics, and even postcards. Jazz bands even played songs about him, like "Felix Kept On Walking" in 1923.

Making these cartoons was a very careful job.

Animators like Otto Messmer drew the characters on white paper. Then, inkers would trace those drawings. To make the backgrounds, they used thin sheets called celluloid. These sheets were laid over the drawings before being photographed. Because the cameras could not move, artists had to draw every bit of perspective by hand. This hard work helped create a world where anything could happen. Felix even had a special way of walking with his hands behind his back.

There is a big debate about who actually created Felix.

Pat Sullivan, who owned the studio, said he came up with the idea. He once said a cat his wife brought to the studio inspired him. However, many people believe the animator Otto Messmer was the true creator. Messmer said he drew the first films like "Feline Follies" all by himself. Some experts think Felix was even based on an animated version of Charlie Chaplin. This would explain why Felix moved and acted like the famous silent film star.

Felix had a very busy life with many different versions.

In 1919, he first appeared as a prototype named Master Tom. By 1923, he was a huge star in comic strips. In 1924, an animator named Bill Nolan made him look rounder and cuter. Later, in 1953, Joe Oriolo gave Felix a whole new look for television. This new Felix had a much larger head and longer legs. Oriolo also gave him a "Magic Bag of Tricks" that could change into any shape.

Even though he is very old, Felix is still part of our world.

In 2002, a magazine ranked him as the 28th greatest cartoon character of all time. His image has even appeared on the tail of an airplane. Today, the character is owned by DreamWorks Animation. You can still find Felix on all sorts of things, from clothing to toys. He remains a symbol of wonder and imagination for people everywhere.
