She represents the carefree spirit of the Jazz Age flappers. These were women who wore short dresses and high heels. People often call her a symbol of the Great Depression era. She is known for her unique and striking look. She has a large, round face like a baby. Her eyes are big, and her nose looks like a little button.

Some people even see her as a feminist icon. This is because she sometimes had to fight off unwanted attention in her stories.

Creating Betty Boop was a step-by-step transformation. She did not start out as a human girl. In her first appearance, she was a French poodle. Her first role was in a cartoon called Dizzy Dishes. This cartoon was released on August 9, 1930. Soon, her poodle ears turned into hoop earrings. Her black poodle nose became a small button nose. By the time the cartoon Any Rags was made, she was a human. Many artists helped make this change happen.

Max Fleischer asked Grim Natwick to design the character. He wanted a caricature of a singer named Helen Kane. The character was part of the Talkartoon series at first. Later, she got her own series in 1932. This series began with a cartoon called Stopping the Show. Because she was so popular, people called her "The Queen of the Animated Screen."

Many different women have provided her voice over the years. Mae Questel voiced her from 1931 until 1939. Cindy Robinson has been her voice since 2015.

Betty Boop appeared in 90 theatrical cartoons between 1930 and 1939. In 1934, she appeared in her only color cartoon. This film was called Poor Cinderella and used Cinecolor. During this time, she even had red hair. In 1934, new rules called the Hays Code changed her. These rules made her appear more modest and less carefree. She went from being a free spirit to a more serious character.

These changes helped her stay popular for many decades.

Even today, Betty Boop is a part of our culture. You can find her on many different kinds of toys. She has been in comic strips and television specials. In 2025, a musical called Boop! debuted on Broadway. Her old black-and-white films are still enjoyed by many people. Some of them can even be found on the Internet Archive. She remains a very important part of animation history.
