Steamboat Willie is a landmark 1928 American animated short film.

Directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, it served as the public debut of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. While the characters appeared in earlier test screenings, this film was their first official release. The cartoon is celebrated for its technical innovation in sound. It is widely considered one of the most influential animated works in history.

The film's plot centers on Mickey Mouse piloting a side-wheeler paddle steamer. Mickey encounters a villainous captain named Pete, who orders him off the bridge. The story features several comedic and musical sequences involving livestock. Mickey uses a goat as a makeshift phonograph by turning its tail like a crank. He also creates percussion by using various objects on the boat. Mickey even plays a cow's teeth and tongue like a xylophone to perform the song "Turkey in the Straw."

Technical innovation was the primary goal of the production. Walt Disney wanted to create a fully synchronized sound cartoon. He was inspired to pursue this after watching the 1927 film The Jazz Singer. This meant the audio would match the onscreen action perfectly. Unlike earlier sound cartoons, such as those from Inkwell Studios, Steamboat Willie used a click track. This device helped musicians stay precisely on the beat. This process ensured that the music and movement worked in unison.

Producing the film involved complex and difficult steps. The team first held a test screening with live sound to see if the idea worked. During this test, Ub Iwerks used pots and pans for percussion. Wilfred Jackson played a mouth organ while Johnny Cannon provided sound effects. The positive response from the audience gave Disney the confidence to continue. To finish the film, Disney used the Cinephone system. This system was a version of the Phonofilm process created by Pat Powers.

Financial and technical hurdles nearly stopped the project. The first attempt to synchronize the recording on September 15, 1928, was a disaster. Disney had to sell his Moon roadster to fund a second recording session. This second attempt was successful because the team added a filmed bouncing ball. This visual aid helped keep the tempo during the recording. The final soundtrack was performed by the Green Brothers Novelty Band. It was conducted by Carl Edouarde to ensure musical precision.

Steamboat Willie achieved immediate and massive success upon its release. It premiered at Universal's Colony Theater in New York City on November 18, 1928.

The film was distributed by Celebrity Productions and became the most popular cartoon of its era. Its success brought international fame to both Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. The film's impact was so great that it was eventually selected for preservation. In 1998, the United States Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry.

The film's legacy continues to be studied by historians and artists. In 1994, animators ranked it as the 13th-greatest cartoon in the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. It also holds a unique place in legal history regarding copyright. After being protected by various extensions for nearly a century, it entered the US public domain on January 1, 2024.
