He serves as the official mascot for the Walt Disney Company. As an anthropomorphic mouse, Mickey possesses human-like qualities and personality. He is recognized worldwide as one of the most famous cultural symbols of the 20th and 21st centuries. His presence extends across many media, including films, television, comic strips, and video games.

The visual design of Mickey Mouse is built upon specific geometric principles. Animator Ub Iwerks designed Mickey's body using circles, particularly for his ears, to make him easier to animate. In the early days, his black hands were difficult to see against his torso. To solve this, animators began using white gloves, a feature that first appeared in the 1929 short *The Opry House*.

In the 1930s, animator Fred Moore updated the design by giving Mickey a pear-shaped body. This change allowed for a wider range of acting and expression. During the production of *Fantasia*, the eyes were further refined to include small white pupils and a lighter skin tone.

Mickey's character design and personality have evolved through several distinct stages. Originally, he was characterized as a cheeky, lovable rogue. Over time, he was rebranded as a spirited, impulsive hero and a "nice guy." His physical appearance also shifted from the black-and-white era to color animation. While his shorts were once a dull blue-green, they became bright red with the advent of color films. Even his stature is a key part of his identity. He is often portrayed as a sympathetic underdog who uses pluck and ingenuity to overcome much larger challenges.

The history of Mickey Mouse began with a period of professional necessity and loss. In February 1928, Walt Disney met with producer Charles Mintz to renew a contract for a character named Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. During this meeting, Disney learned of budget cuts and that several of his animators were leaving for Mintz's studio. Only a few animators, including Ub Iwerks, stayed with Disney. This loss forced the studio to create a new character in relative secrecy.

While various myths exist regarding his inspiration, the character was a direct response to the loss of Oswald.

Naming the character was also a collaborative process involving Disney's family. The original intended name was "Mortimer Mouse." However, Walt Disney's wife, Lillian, suggested the name "Mickey" instead. The character's official public debut occurred in the short film *Steamboat Willie* on November 18, 1928.

Although two earlier shorts, *Plane Crazy* and *The Gallopin' Gaucho*, were produced, they did not find distributors. *Steamboat Willie* changed everything by using synchronized sound. This technology allowed the music to match the onscreen action perfectly, which was a major innovation at the time.

Mickey's impact on the entertainment industry is measurable through various honors and statistics. He has appeared in over 130 films, ranging from short cartoons to feature-length works like *Fantasia*.
