He used this name to write the famous series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. This series includes thirteen books about three orphans facing many hard times. He also wrote the series All the Wrong Questions about the character's childhood. These stories show how one person can use imagination to build whole new worlds.

Writing is a big part of his life, but he does not always follow a simple path. His first book, The Basic Eight, was quite different from his children's books. Many publishers rejected it thirty-seven times because the story was very dark. He did not let this stop him from becoming a successful author. He also writes books for adults, such as Why We Broke Up. This book was very special because it won a Michael L. Printz honor award in 2012.

Music is another way Handler shares his creativity with the world. He is a skilled player of the accordion, which is an instrument with bellows. He has played in several bands like the Edith Head Trio and Tzamboni. He even worked with the indie pop band The Magnetic Fields on their album 69 Love Songs. Sometimes his music and his writing come together in wonderful ways. For example, the band The Gothic Archies provided songs for his famous audiobook series. This shows how different kinds of art can join to tell a story.

Handler's life in San Francisco has shaped much of his work and his views. He was born there in 1970 to Sandra and Louis Handler. His father was a Jewish refugee who came from Germany in 1939. Handler attended many local schools, including Lowell High School, before going to Wesleyan University. He is a secular humanist and an atheist, which are ways of describing his personal beliefs. He also cares about helping others and often gives money to many different charities.

Sometimes, being a famous person brings difficult moments and hard lessons. In 2014, Handler made a joke at a book award ceremony that was based on a racist stereotype. This caused a lot of hurt and many people criticized him for it. He apologized and donated $10,000 to a group called We Need Diverse Books. Later, in 2018, other people shared stories about him making unkind or inappropriate comments. Handler said he was listening and willing to learn from these mistakes. He continues to live in San Francisco with his wife, Lisa, and their child.
