arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dan Brown is a famous American author of thriller novels. His stories often feel like fast-paced treasure hunts. Most of his books take place over a single 24-hour period. He loves to write about secret codes, art, and conspiracy theories. These themes keep readers wondering what will happen next. Many of his books have been translated into 57 different languages. As of 2012, his books sold over 200 million copies worldwide.

Brown's love for puzzles started when he was a young boy. His father, Richard G. Brown, was a mathematics teacher. His family used codes and ciphers to connect math, music, and language. On holidays, Brown and his siblings did not just find gifts under a tree. Instead, they followed treasure maps with clues around their house and town. These childhood games inspired many parts of his famous books. For example, a chapter in *The Da Vinci Code* was based on a real treasure hunt.

Before he was a full-time writer, Brown explored many different paths. He graduated from Amherst College in 1986 with degrees in English and Spanish. He also spent time studying art history in Seville, Spain. After college, he tried a career in music. He used a synthesizer to create sounds for a children's album called *SynthAnimals*. He even released a CD titled *Angels & Demons* in 1994. His wife, Blythe Newlon, helped him promote his musical projects.

Brown became a massive success with his fourth major book. *The Da Vinci Code*, released in 2003, reached the top of the bestseller lists quickly. This book and others like *Angels & Demons* and *Inferno* were made into movies. His character Robert Langdon is a famous expert in symbology, which is the study of symbols. This character appears in many books, including *The Lost Symbol* and *Origin*. Some of these stories have even been turned into television series.

It is interesting to see how Brown's real life mixes with his fiction. He often names his characters after people he knows. The character Robert Langdon was named after the artist John Langdon. He also used the names of his parents, Dick and Connie, in a story. Brown's writing also links science and spirituality. He once studied how the Big Bang and science relate to faith. He says his books can help people explore their own thoughts and beliefs.
