Robert Ludlum was a famous American author who wrote many thriller novels. Thrillers are stories that use suspense to keep readers interested. He is best known for creating the character Jason Bourne. Ludlum wrote 27 of these books during his career. People all over the world enjoy his writing. Between 300 million and 500 million copies of his books are in print. His stories have been published in 33 different languages. They are also found in 40 different countries.

Writing a book takes a lot of focus and hard work. In the 1970s, Ludlum lived in Leonia, New Jersey. He spent many hours each day working on his stories. He often wrote for six or seven hours in his home office. His books often feature a hero or a small group of people. These heroes struggle against very powerful and evil enemies. These enemies might be large companies or secret government groups.

Before he became a writer, Ludlum had many other jobs. He served as a United States Marine. He also worked as a theatrical actor and a producer. He studied drama at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He earned his degree there in 1951. Ludlum used his theater experience to help him write. He believed that good stories should feel like theater. He wanted readers to always wonder what happens next.

Ludlum's ideas often came from real-world theories. For example, his book *The Matarese Circle* was inspired by rumors about the Trilateral Commission. He also wrote about how secret groups might use terrorism to gain power. His stories often take place in a world of global secrets. Many of his books have been turned into films or miniseries. Some famous titles include *The Bourne Identity* and *The Holcroft Covenant*. The movie *The Bourne Ultimatum* even won three Academy Awards in 2008.

Even after he passed away, his work stayed very busy. Ludlum died on March 12, 2001, in Naples, Florida. He had been recovering from a fire that happened in February 2001. His estate, called Ludlum Entertainment, still manages his work today. His stories have moved from books to movies and even video games. Different companies like Electronic Arts have held the rights to make games. This shows how much people still value his exciting stories.
