He is most well-known for his Camp Half-Blood Chronicles. These books include the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and The Heroes of Olympus. His stories often mix the modern world with old legends. He has written about Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Norse mythology. His books have been translated into forty-two different languages. They have sold more than thirty million copies in the United States alone.

Riordan creates his worlds by blending history with magic. He often writes about young people who discover they have divine powers. For example, Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old boy. He finds out he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. Riordan also wrote The Kane Chronicles about Egyptian gods. He also wrote Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard about Norse myths. These stories show how humans and gods might interact today. He uses his general knowledge and modern websites to check his facts.

His journey as a writer began with his own family. Riordan was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1964. He studied English and History at the University of Texas at Austin. Before his big success, he wrote mystery books for adults. These were called the Tres Navarre series. He even won awards like the Shamus and Edgar awards for them. Later, he taught English and Social Studies for eight years in San Francisco. He even earned a master's degree in Gaelic literature in 2021.

Many of his most famous ideas came from his son, Haley. Riordan started telling bedtime stories about Greek heroes to him. His son has ADHD and dyslexia. Because of this, Riordan made Percy Jackson have those same traits. This helped many readers feel like the characters were like them. His big breakthrough came in 2005 with The Lightning Thief. This was the first book in his five-volume Percy Jackson series. He also helped create The 39 Clues series for Scholastic Press.

Today, Riordan's work lives on in many different ways. His books have become graphic novels and short story collections. He also worked on the Percy Jackson series for Disney+. He won two Emmy Awards for his work on that show. He also started a group called "Rick Riordan Presents." This group helps new and diverse authors tell their own myth stories. He acts as a curator to bring them into the spotlight. This way, he can share the joy of mythology with even more people.
