He is most famous for creating the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles. This massive collection includes the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and the Heroes of Olympus series. His work also encompasses the Trials of Apollo and the Nico di Angelo Adventures. Riordan's stories have reached a global audience through massive sales and translations. His books have sold over thirty million copies in the United States alone. They have also been translated into forty-two different languages.

Riordan's storytelling mechanism involves blending historical mythology with contemporary settings. He often focuses on the interaction between humans and the divine. His narratives frequently feature adolescents who discover they possess supernatural lineages. For instance, the character Percy Jackson learns he is a twelve-year-old son of the Greek god Poseidon. Riordan uses various mythologies as the foundation for his different series. He has explored Greco-Roman, Egyptian, and Norse traditions across five separate novel series. To ensure accuracy, he uses modern resources like The Theoi Project for fact-checking.

His literary output is organized into several distinct mythological frameworks. The Camp Half-Blood Chronicles focus on Greco-Roman myths through characters like Percy Jackson. The Kane Chronicles utilize an Egyptian pantheon featuring siblings Sadie and Carter Kane. Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard introduces readers to Norse mythology. Riordan also contributed to the children's book series The 39 Clues. He authored the first book in that series, titled The Maze of Bones. This specific book reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller list in September 2008.

Riordan's career followed a unique path from education to massive literary success. Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1964, he studied English and History at the University of Texas at Austin. He spent eight years teaching English and Social Studies at Presidio Hill School in San Francisco. Before his breakthrough in children's literature, he wrote the Tres Navarre series. This was a series of mystery novels written for adult readers. These earlier books earned him prestigious literary honors, including the Shamus, Anthony, and Edgar Awards.

His most significant breakthrough occurred in 2005 with the publication of The Lightning Thief. This novel served as the first installment in his five-volume Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. The inspiration for this series was deeply personal and rooted in his family life. Riordan began telling bedtime stories about Greek heroes to his son, Haley. Because Haley had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, Riordan gave Percy Jackson these same traits. This decision allowed many young readers to see themselves reflected in the protagonist.

Riordan's influence extends far beyond the printed page into television and digital media. While 20th Century Fox produced two film adaptations between 2010 and 2013, Riordan was not involved with them. However, he took a much more active role in the Disney+ television adaptation released in 2023. He served as a co-creator and an executive producer for the series. This involvement led to significant professional recognition. He won two Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Young Teen Series and another for Outstanding Writing for a Young Teen Program.

Beyond his own writing, Riordan acts as a curator for new talent through his imprint. In March 2018, he launched the "Rick Riordan Presents" imprint with Scholastic Press. This platform is managed by his editor, Stephanie Owens Lurie. The goal of the imprint is to support diverse, mythology-based fiction. It specifically seeks to highlight new, emerging, and under-represented authors. Riordan does not write the books for this imprint himself. Instead, he uses his platform to bring these talented writers into the spotlight for his loyal audience.
