These stories follow two teenage brothers named Frank and Joe Hardy. They are amateur detectives who solve many difficult cases. These mysteries often stump the adult police officers in their town. The boys live in the seaside city of Bayport on Barmet Bay. They live with their father, Fenton Hardy, who is a professional detective. They also live with their mother, Laura, and their Aunt Gertrude. The brothers are very close and rarely fight with each other. Frank is eighteen years old and is known as the thinker. Joe is seventeen years old and is more impulsive and athletic.

They often travel to far-off places like Mexico, Scotland, and Egypt.

Making these books is a very organized process. A company called the Stratemeyer Syndicate used a special way to work. First, a person creates a detailed outline for the plot. This outline includes all the important story elements. Next, a writer turns that outline into a full manuscript. Finally, an editor checks the manuscript to make sure it is ready. Many different writers worked on these books over many years. They all used the same pen name, Franklin W. Dixon. These writers are called ghostwriters because they do not use their own names. In the early days, ghostwriters were often paid a flat fee. During the Great Depression, this pay dropped from $125 to $75 per book.

Edward Stratemeyer created the characters in 1926. He was the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. He first suggested names like the Keene Boys or the Bixby Boys. However, the publishers chose the name The Hardy Boys instead. The first three books were published in 1927. These books became an immediate success for the company. By the middle of 1929, more than 115,000 books had been sold. The series was so popular that Stratemeyer also created Nancy Drew. She was made to be a female counterpart to the Hardy Boys. This success helped the Syndicate grow into a very large business.

Many people have helped shape the stories over time. A Canadian writer named Leslie McFarlane wrote many early books. He wrote nineteen of the first twenty-five titles between 1927 and 1946. He was known for using very clear and detailed writing. Later, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped write many plot outlines. From 1959 to 1973, the first 38 books were changed. Editors revised them to remove old stereotypes and modernize the content. They also made the books shorter for readers. In 1987, a new series called The Hardy Boys Casefiles began. These stories were more serious and included international espionage. In 2005, the Undercover Brothers series was launched for a new era.

The Hardy Boys have stayed popular for nearly a hundred years. Their adventures have been translated into more than 25 different languages. You can find the boys in many places besides books. They have been in five different television shows. They have even appeared in several video games. The characters have been used to sell items like jeans and lunchboxes. Some people think they are popular because they represent American ideals. Others say readers enjoy seeing good people win against evil. On January 1, 2023, the very first three books entered the public domain. This means anyone can now use those original versions freely.
