Carolyn Keene is a famous pen name used for mystery stories. A pen name is a name a writer uses instead of their own. This name is most famous for the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories. People also know this name for The Dana Girls mystery stories. These books were made by a group called the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The name also covers the River Heights spin-off and the Nancy Drew Notebooks.

Using a pen name helps keep many different writers under one single identity.

The way these books were made was a very specific job. Edward Stratemeyer founded the Stratemeyer Syndicate and hired writers to write the manuscripts. These writers were paid $125 for every book they finished. Their contracts required them to keep their real names a secret. They also had to give up all rights to their work. This is why many people call them ghostwriters.

They worked behind the scenes to create the stories we read.

The history of these stories began with many different people. Mildred Wirt Benson is credited as the main writer for the early Nancy Drew books. After Benson left, Harriet Adams began rewriting the original books. Harriet Adams was the daughter of the founder, Edward Stratemeyer. Many other writers used the Keene name over the years. These included people like Leslie McFarlane and James Duncan Lawrence.

Each writer helped build the world of Nancy Drew.

Many important names and dates shaped these mystery books. The first Nancy Drew book, The Secret of the Old Clock, came out in 1930. In 1979, the Syndicate changed publishers to Simon & Schuster. This move led to a court case with the old publishers, Grosset & Dunlap. The court decided the Syndicate could choose their own publishers. In 1985, Simon & Schuster bought the Stratemeyer Syndicate.

Today, a New York group called Mega-Books handles the books.

Many people helped make these characters feel real to readers. A secretary named Harriet Otis Smith invented Nancy's friends, Bess and George. Harriet Adams's daughters also helped by giving input on the series. They sometimes helped to choose the titles for new books. Editors at Grosset & Dunlap also played a part in the process.
