Carolyn Keene is not a real person. It is a pen name. A pen name is a name a writer uses instead of their own.

Many writers used this name to make mystery books. They wrote about Nancy Drew. They also wrote about The Dana Girls. A group called the Stratemeyer Syndicate managed the books. Edward Stratemeyer started this group. He hired writers to make the stories. One main writer was Mildred Wirt Benson. She wrote many early Nancy Drew books.

Writing these books was a job. Writers were paid $125 for each book. They had to keep their real names secret. This is why we call them ghostwriters. Other people helped too. Harriet Adams was Edward's daughter. She rewrote old books and added new ones. A secretary named Harriet Otis Smith made up Nancy's friends. Her name was Bess and George.

Many other writers used the name over the years. Some wrote in the 1930s. Others wrote in the 1980s. The books have changed publishers many times. Today, a group called Mega-Books handles the Nancy Drew stories.
