Writing many books requires a very special way of working. Steel says it can take about two and a half years to finish one book. She is a master at multitasking and often works on five different projects at the same time. To do this, she might research one story while she is outlining a different one. She often writes at night so she can spend more time with her children. This hard work helped her stay on the New York Times bestseller list for a very long time. In 1999, Guinness World Records noted she had a book on that list for 456 weeks.

Steel's journey as a writer began in her youth. She was born in New York City in 1947. Her father was a German-Jewish immigrant, and her mother was the daughter of a Portuguese diplomat. Much of her childhood was spent in France. This time was important because she attended many dinner parties with famous and wealthy people. These experiences helped her learn about the lives of others. She studied fashion and literature design in New York after graduating from the Lycée Français de New York in 1965. She finished her very first manuscript when she was only 19 years old.

Her career has grown into many different areas of art and service. Beyond novels, she wrote poetry and a series of 57 children's books called Max and Martha. These books help young readers understand real-life situations like starting a new school. She also founded the Nick Traina Foundation to help people with mental health issues. This foundation was created to honor her son, Nick. Steel has received many honors for her work. The French government named her an Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002. She was also inducted into the California Hall of Fame in 2009.

Many people recognize her work through other types of media. Her stories are so popular that they have been translated into 43 different languages. Twenty-two of her books have been turned into television shows. Some of these shows even earned Golden Globe nominations. One famous example is Jewels, which tells a story about a family in World War II Europe. Even though she is very famous, Steel is known to be a shy person. She prefers to spend her time writing or staying at her home in Paris.
