Schulz developed his craft through many different stages of work. He began with a one-panel series called Li'l Folks in 1947. He originally published this in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Eventually, he redeveloped the concept into a four-panel format. He submitted this new version to United Features Syndicate. The syndicate renamed the strip Peanuts for legal reasons. It first appeared in seven newspapers on October 2, 1950.

Many characters in Peanuts were drawn from Schulz's real life. Charlie Brown reflected Schulz's own shy and withdrawn personality. The character's parents were similar to Schulz's own parents. The Little Red-Haired Girl was based on Donna Johnson. Schulz had proposed marriage to her in June 1950. She turned him down and married someone else. This personal experience became a central theme for Charlie Brown. Even the name Peppermint Patty came from peppermint candies in his home.

Schulz's military service also shaped his life and perspective. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He served as a staff sergeant with the 20th Armored Division.

He spoke about his wartime service with pride in later years.

The success of Peanuts was massive in scale. At its peak, the strip appeared in 2,600 newspapers. It reached readers in 75 different countries and 21 languages. Over nearly 50 years, Schulz drew 17,897 published strips.
