Before his big TV shows, Groening drew a comic strip. It was called Life in Hell. This comic strip was in 250 weekly newspapers. When a producer wanted to use his comic for TV, Groening had a new idea. He did not want to lose his old characters. So, he made a new family called the Simpsons. He named them after his own family. Homer and Marge were named after his parents. Lisa and Maggie were named after his sisters.
