Matchmaking

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Matchmaking is the way people are paired together. Most often, this helps people find a spouse for marriage. A person who does this is called a matchmaker or a marriage broker. Some people do this as a professional job for a fee. Other people, like leaders in a church, do it as part of their role.

This idea of pairing things also works in other areas. It can happen in business or in sports. It even happens in online video games or when finding organ donors.

In some cultures, matchmaking has very specific steps. In Jewish history, a professional called a shadchan helped families. They used gossip and careful listening to find good matches. They acted like friendly ambassadors between different families. This helped keep the community strong during hard times like the Crusades.

Later, in the late 19th century, some people thought this was an old way of life. By the 1930s, they were seen more as a curiosity in the United States.

Different groups use different tools to find a match. Hindu astrologers have often helped families find the right spouses. They use the stars to bless matches that parents approve of. Some people have even used tarot cards for this task.

In North America, social dances like the square dance helped people meet. Since many farming families lived far apart, they met at church or dances. Matchmakers would act as chaperones to watch for new romances.

Many places have formal systems for matchmaking today. In Singapore, a government group called the Social Development Unit helps citizens. They use both professional advice and special technology. In Iran, there were 50 dating agencies as of July 2023. Some Jewish communities still use a system called shidduch to introduce singles.

People are interested in this again because of dating apps and television shows.

Matchmaking also helps the world of business run smoothly. This is often called business-to-business or B2B matchmaking. It helps companies find the right partners for work or investment. Some people use in-person meetings at trade fairs to meet. This is different from just using a social network online. Even in sports, matchmaking services help players find the right people to play with.
