This name refers to religions that respect or admire a figure named Abraham. The three largest groups in this set are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Some smaller faiths are also included in this category. One example is the Baháʼí Faith, which began in the late 19th century. This group is called Abrahamic because it is monotheistic and traces its descent to Abraham. The term helps people talk about shared ideas in many different ways.

These religions share many common ideas and histories. They are all monotheistic, which means they believe in only one God. Many of them share themes like creation, revelation, and redemption. Some thinkers say these faiths come from one single spiritual source. They also share certain geographic areas and historical roots. However, these shared ideas can vary a lot between each group. It is important to notice both the links and the differences.

Its followers viewed Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God. Islam also traces its roots back to Abraham. Many traditions say Muslims descend from Abraham through his son Ishmael. The Quran is the central holy book for Muslims.

There are many specific facts about how these faiths work. For example, Judaism and Islam have rules about not eating pork. Christianity has unique beliefs like the Trinity and the resurrection of Jesus. These specific ideas are not shared by the other two groups. Judaism also developed ideas about angels and judgment after death. Christianity became the state church of the Roman Empire in the year 380. Later, the East-West Schism in 1054 split the Christian church. The Reformation in the 16th century also created many new denominations.

It is helpful to see how these religions connect to the wider world. The term "Abrahamic religions" was first used in the 20th century. It replaced the older term "Judeo-Christian" to include Islam in the conversation. Today, the term is used by scholars and in civil talks. Some people criticize the term for being too simple. They argue it might hide the big differences between the faiths. Each tradition has its own unique culture and core beliefs. Even with shared roots, they have all gone their separate ways.
