This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

A marriage of convenience happens when people wed for reasons other than love. They might do this to reach a specific goal. Some people use marriage for a strategic purpose, like a political plan. Other people marry to gain a personal benefit. If the couple does not plan to live together, it is often called a sham marriage. In some cultures, parents choose who their adult children marry. This is known as an arranged marriage.

Sometimes, people use marriage to find a legal loophole. A loophole is a way to bypass a rule. For example, many countries allow a person to live there if they marry a citizen. In the United States, this is called a green card marriage. In Australia, two students married on a university lawn on March 31, 2010. They did this to show flaws in the Youth Allowance laws. They wanted to receive full payments from the government. During the Vietnam War, some men married to avoid the military draft.

History shows that these unions have existed for a very long time. In ancient Roman Egypt, between 30 BCE and 395 CE, siblings often married. This happened in about 15% to 21% of all unions. They did this to keep property inside the family. Powerful royal families also used marriages of state to make alliances. Famous names like Catherine of Aragon were part of these political marriages. These unions helped link two strong and important houses together.

Breaking these laws can lead to very serious trouble. In the United States, the law treats sham marriages very strictly. The Immigration Marriage Fraud Amendments Act of 1986 created big penalties. If someone marries just to break immigration laws, they can face a fine. This fine can be as high as $250,000. A person might also go to prison for five years. Other crimes like mail fraud can lead to 20 years in prison.

Marriage can also be used to hide a person's identity. A lavender marriage is a type of sham marriage used by LGBT people. People might do this to avoid being treated unfairly or punished. Sometimes a gay man marries a woman to keep up an appearance. In this case, the woman is sometimes called a "beard." This helps the person stay safe in places where they cannot be open. Even the idea of a partnership is used in politics. Leaders might form a "national unity government" to work together for a common goal.
