Some people call these mixed marriages or interreligious marriages. These unions can be civil marriages, which are legal agreements. Other times, they are religious marriages held with special ceremonies. Every religion has its own rules about these marriages. Some religions allow them with certain requirements for customs. Other religions do not allow them at all. Some religions do not have specific rules on the topic.

In these families, partners often keep their own separate faiths. One big question they face is how to raise children. They must decide which faith or traditions to teach them.

Laws and human rights help guide how people marry. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says adults can marry without limits. These limits should not be based on religion. Many countries follow these ideas in their own legal systems. In the United States, interfaith marriage is becoming much more common. A study from the Pew Research Center in 2015 showed this change. Before 1960, about 81% of marriages were within the same religion. By the period of 2010 to 2014, that number dropped to 61%.

Today, these marriages are most common among Jews and Protestants. They are less common among Muslims, Hindus, and Mormons.

History shows how people have adapted to these different unions. In the mid-20th century, some couples faced hard times. For example, actress Joan Boocock Lee and Stan Lee had difficulty adopting a child. Since the 1960s, musicians have written special music for these weddings. John Serry Sr. was a famous organist who did this work. He played music for Jewish and Roman Catholic ceremonies. He worked at the Interfaith Chapel of Long Island University for many years.

He even worked with rabbis and priests to help different faiths unite. This helped create music that respected both religious traditions.

Rules for marriage can be very different around the world. In Israel, religious authorities usually perform the marriages. Because of this, many people must convert to a religion first. Some groups, like the Druze, do not allow marriage to outsiders. In Lebanon, there is no secular civil marriage available. Couples often travel to Cyprus to have a civil marriage instead. In Saudi Arabia, religious rights are very restricted for everyone. Public celebrations of other religions are generally not allowed there.

These laws shape how people live their daily lives.

In India, interfaith marriage can be a very controversial topic. Some areas have rules about people changing their religion to marry. In 2020 and 2021, some states passed laws about this. These laws require people to notify the government before they marry. Some couples even move to different states to find legal ways to marry. In India, marriage is also tied to the caste system. This system involves social groups and different levels of status. Some people use marriage to try to move between these social boundaries. It is a complex part of how society works there.
