Interracial marriage happens when people from different races marry.

This topic is important because it shows how laws and social views change. For a long time, many places had rules against these marriages. People used the term "miscegenation" to describe this mixing. This word came from a fake pamphlet in 1864. Some leaders used these rules to keep groups of people apart. These laws were meant to enforce a social hierarchy.

In the United States, these laws were very common. In 1691, Maryland passed the first law against interracial marriage. By the late 1800s, 38 states had similar rules. Even in 1960, 31 states still forbade these marriages. Nazi Germany and apartheid-era South Africa also had strict laws. These rules were often based on unfair ideas about race. Many people believed these laws were necessary to keep races separate.

Change came through the legal system in the 1960s. A famous court case called Loving v. Virginia changed everything. The Supreme Court looked at the laws in Virginia. They decided these laws violated the Constitution. Chief Justice Earl Warren led this important decision in 1967. This ruling made interracial marriage legal in all fifty states.

Since then, most nations have accepted these marriages.

Public opinion has changed a lot over the years. In 1958, 94% of Americans disapproved of interracial marriage. By 2013, only 11% of Americans felt that way. In 2021, 94% of U.S. adults approved of these marriages. This shows a huge shift in how people think. African Americans have shown very high approval rates for decades. In 2013, 96% of Black Americans approved of these unions.

These marriages can bring many positive things to society. Meeting people from different groups can reduce prejudice. This is sometimes called the "Contact Hypothesis." When families mix, they often learn more about different views. Being multiracial can also be a unique experience. Some people feel pressure to choose only one race. However, many multiracial people feel very proud of their identities. They may even find new ways to solve problems.
