Some people marry for reasons other than love. This is called a marriage of convenience. People might do this to gain a personal benefit.

In the past, powerful families used marriage to make alliances. These were called marriages of state. Royal families used them to link two strong houses. In ancient Roman Egypt, brothers and sisters sometimes married. They did this to keep property in the family.

Sometimes, people use marriage to follow a legal loophole. This means they find a way around a rule. In the United States, some marry to get a green card. This helps them live in the country. In Australia, two students married to show a law flaw. They wanted to get youth money from the government.

Other people use marriage to hide a secret. This is often called a lavender marriage. People might do this to stay safe from being treated unfairly.

These marriages can have big risks. If a marriage is a sham, it is against the law. In the U.S., people can face huge fines. They can even go to prison for five years or more.
