Liu Tianhua was a very important musician from China. He was a master of two special instruments. He played the erhu, which is a two-stringed fiddle. He also played the pipa, a stringed instrument. Liu wanted to make traditional music feel new and modern. He believed this music could be played on big stages.

His work helped change how people heard Chinese music forever.

Liu worked hard to improve how instruments were played. He made changes to the erhu so it worked better for stage performances. He also changed the pipa instrument. He added more frets to the pipa. Frets are the raised marks on the neck of an instrument. He also used a new way to tune the notes called equal-tempered tuning.

These changes helped the music sound much clearer.

Liu's journey in music began many years ago. He was born in 1895. He was the younger brother of a poet named Liu Bannong. In 1922, he joined a music society at Peking University. He worked there as an instructor for instruments.

He spent his life teaching and sharing his love for sound.

Liu started many groups to help music grow. In 1927, he founded the Society for the Improvement of Chinese Music. He also started a periodical called the Music Magazine. This society held many classes for students. They even formed a musical group to play together.

This group was a forerunner of the modern Chinese orchestra we see today.

Liu wrote many beautiful pieces of music for his instruments. Some songs were about a moon night. Other songs sounded like birds in a mountain. He wrote a piece called "Towards Brightness" in 1931. He also wrote "Sound of Emptiness" in 1929.

Liu died in 1932 at age 37 from a streptococcus infection. His students, like Jiang Fengzhi and Chen Zhenduo, kept his music alive for others.
