It is different from the guzheng, which has moveable bridges. Some people call the guqin a lute or a harp. However, it is actually a type of zither. This instrument is a deep part of Chinese culture.

Playing the guqin involves many careful movements.

A player uses their right hand to pluck the open strings. This creates a fundamental sound called san yin. The left hand is also very busy. Players press the strings to change the notes. They can slide their fingers to make a glissando. This sounds like a slide guitar.

There are 13 glossy white dots on the front. These are called hui. They show the player where to press for different notes.

Players can also make special, ringing sounds. These are called harmonics or fan yin. To do this, the player taps a specific spot on the string. The guqin can make 91 different harmonics.

There are also over 1,070 different finger techniques. This is a huge number of ways to play. Some techniques make the sound change or slide. This variety helps the instrument express many feelings. It is one of the most complex instruments in the world.

Legend says the guqin is 5,000 years old.

Famous figures like Confucius are linked to its history. Real writing shows it existed nearly 3,000 years ago. We have found examples in tombs from 2,500 years ago. In the past, it might have had only five strings. Now, the seven-string version is the standard. There are more than 3,360 surviving pieces of music. In 2010, one Song period guqin sold for $22 million.

The guqin is a treasure for all of humanity.

UNESCO named it a World Cultural Heritage in 2003. In 1977, a song called "Flowing Water" went into space. It was put on the Voyager Golden Record. NASA sent this record on the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. They chose it because its sounds follow physical laws of vibration. This shows how smart humans are about music. It connects ancient traditions to the stars above us.
