Zhou Bangyan was a famous artist and leader from China. He lived during the Northern Song dynasty. He was a talented poet and a gifted musician. People also remember him for his work in the government. He is known as one of the "Four Great Ci Poets." This means he was a master of a special kind of poetry. His work helped set a standard for many writers who came later.

Zhou was very good at writing a style called ci. This type of poetry began in the Tang era. It became very popular during the Song dynasty. Zhou's style was elegant and very polished. Some people described his writing as simple, honest, and elegant. He did not just write words on a page. He was a musician who set his own poems to music. He worked closely with the imperial Music Bureau to make tunes.

Zhou was born in 1056 in a place called Qiantang. This area is known today as Hangzhou. When he was 23, he moved to the capital city. The capital was named Bianliang. There, he became a student at the National Academy. In 1083, he wrote a poem called "Rhapsody on the capital." This poem described the busy life in the city. It also praised the many things the Song dynasty had done.

His writing helped him find important jobs in the government. Emperor Shenzong liked his poem very much. Because of this, Zhou became a supervisor at the National Academy. He later worked in places like Lu Prefecture and Lishui County. He rose through the ranks under Emperor Zhezong and Emperor Huizong. His highest job was Director of the Palace Library. This was a very important role in the central government.

Zhou left behind a famous book of his poetry. It has two volumes and has two different names. It is called the Qingzhen-ji or the Pianyu-ci. Many poets in the Southern Song dynasty studied his work. They tried to copy his beautiful and elaborate style. A man named Chen Yuanlong even wrote a ten-volume commentary on the poems. This book was called the Pianyu-ji. Zhou's art lived on through these many readers.
