He was born in 1891 in Xiangtan, Hunan. He grew up in a scholarly family with seven brothers. One brother was a linguist named Li Jinxi. Another brother, Chin Yang Lee, became an author in the United States. Li studied the guqin, which is a traditional Chinese instrument. He also loved the folk music of his home region. He wanted to make music for everyone to enjoy. He called this goal "music for the common people."

Li created a brand new musical style called shidaiqu.

This style mixed Chinese folk songs with Western instruments. He used guitars, violins, and pianos to make new sounds. He even worked with an American musician named Buck Clayton. Clayton helped Li shape his musical scores for two years. Li also led the first all-Chinese jazz band. This band played in an upscale nightclub in Shanghai. His music became very popular in cafes and clubs across Southeast Asia.

Li's career began with many different jobs. He worked as a secretary in Beijing from 1911 to 1914. Later, he became a teacher of music and Mandarin Chinese. In 1920, he started the Bright Moon Song and Dance Troupe. He also edited a magazine called Little Friend. This magazine became the best-selling periodical in the country. He used nursery rhymes to teach children about harmony and good citizenship. He even wrote children's operas like "The Grape Fairy."

Li's work brought him great fame but also many hard times.

Some critics did not like his new style of music. They called it "Yellow Music" because of its associations. This caused his music to be banned in China after 1949. Li also faced political persecution during the Cultural Revolution. He died in 1967, though some sources say 1968. His daughter, Li Minghui, became a famous child film star. His wife, Xu Lai, also became a movie star.

Even though his life was difficult, Li's impact was huge. He helped many performers become stars, like Zhou Xuan. Zhou Xuan became one of the seven great singing stars of the Republic of China. Li also helped start the era of musical talkies in film. His musical ideas helped lead to modern pop music. This includes the popular music styles known as cantopop and mandopop. These styles are very important in Hong Kong and Taiwan today.
