Shen Congwen was one of the greatest modern writers in China. He is often compared to the famous writer Lu Xun. Shen was a leader of the "native soil" style of writing. This means he wrote deeply about local culture and identity. He used a special way of writing that mixed common speech with classical styles. His most famous work is a novella called Border Town. This story follows an old ferryman and a girl named Cuicui.

Shen learned about the world in a very unique way. As a boy, he found formal school quite boring. He often skipped his classes to observe real life. He called this experience the "book of life." He learned by watching people and listening to storytellers in the marketplace. This way of learning shaped his view of the world. Later, the writer Mo Yan said this gave Shen an early start on reading life.
