He is known for his stories about local life. He was a leader in the "native soil" style of writing. This means he wrote about the people and places of his home.

Shen was born in 1902 in Fenghuang. His family had many different backgrounds. His mother was Tujia and his grandmother was Miao. He felt a strong bond to the Miao people. As a child, he did not like school. He thought it was boring. Instead, he learned by watching the world. He called this the "book of life."

His most famous book is called Border Town. It is a story about a girl named Cuicui. It also tells of an old ferryman. Shen also studied ancient Chinese clothes. He worked at a museum to help save these items.

His life was not always easy. He faced hard times during political changes in China. He suffered from deep sadness during these years. Later, he was a researcher of old art. In 1988, he was a finalist for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died before he could win the award.
