Liu Tianhua was a famous musician from China. He lived from 1895 to 1932. Liu was a master of two instruments. He played the erhu, which is a two-stringed fiddle. He also played the pipa, a stringed instrument.

Liu wanted to make traditional music modern. He changed the erhu for big stage shows. He also changed the pipa. He added more frets to it. He used a new way to tune the notes.

Liu helped many people learn music. In 1927, he started a group called the Society for the Improvement of Chinese Music. This group held classes for students. They also formed a musical group. This group helped lead to the modern Chinese orchestra.

Liu wrote many beautiful pieces of music. Some songs were about a moon night. Others sounded like birds in a mountain. One piece was called "Towards Brightness." He died at age 37 from an infection. His students, like Jiang Fengzhi, kept his work going. They helped the erhu grow even more.
