Li Mu was a famous military leader in ancient China. He served the State of Zhao during the Warring States period. People in Chinese folklore call him one of the four greatest generals of his time. He was known as a master of defense. This means he was very good at protecting his land from enemies.

In 265 BC, Li Mu worked in the Yanmen Commandery. His job was to stop raids from the Xiongnu and other tribes. At first, he used a very careful defensive plan. Some people thought he was being a coward because of this. He actually used a clever trick to win. He pretended to lose a small fight to lure the Xiongnu into a trap. The Zhao army then surrounded them and won a huge victory.

Li Mu led many different types of soldiers. The Zhao army had 1,300 war chariots and 13,000 cavalry. They also had 50,000 infantry and 100,000 archers. These soldiers were spread out across the countryside. Li Mu used these forces to defeat many groups. He beat the Dan Lan and the Dong Hu. He even made the Lin Hu surrender.

Later, the State of Qin became a very big threat. Qin had already taken much land from Zhao. Even though Zhao was weak, Li Mu could still hold them off. In 233 BC, he crushed a Qin army at Yi'an. For this, he became the Marquis of Wu'an. In 232 BC, he won another victory at the Battle of Fanwu. He even stopped attacks from the Han-Wei groups in the south.

Tragedy came to Li Mu in 229 BC. The Qin state sent spies to the Zhao court. These spies bribed men like Guo Kai and Han Cang. They told the King of Zhao that Li Mu was planning a rebellion. The King believed the lies and removed Li Mu from his job. Soon after, the King ordered him to die. Without their great general, the State of Zhao fell to Qin. Today, Li Mu is remembered in temples and even in modern stories.
