In 265 BC, Li Mu had to protect the north. He fought against tribes called the Xiongnu. At first, he used a very careful plan. Some people thought he was too shy. But his plan worked well. He tricked the Xiongnu into a trap. His army won a very big victory. He also defeated other groups like the Dan Lan and Dong Hu.

Later, a strong land called Qin attacked Zhao. Qin was very powerful. They had already taken much land from Zhao. Still, Li Mu could stop them. In 233 BC, he crushed a Qin army. The king gave him a special title for this. He was called the Marquis of Wu'an.

In 229 BC, Qin sent spies to Zhao. The spies told lies to the king. They said Li Mu wanted to take over. The king believed the lies. He removed Li Mu from his job. Soon after, the king ordered Li Mu to die. Without him, the State of Zhao fell to Qin.
