Many governments use a constitution. This is a set of main ideas and rules for the leaders.

Governments began long ago. About 5,000 years ago, small city-states appeared. Farming helped this happen. People grew extra food. This let people do other jobs. Some people became leaders.

As cities grew, they needed more order. They needed to manage things like water.

There are many types of government. In a democracy, people have power. In a monarchy, one person rules. Often, power stays in a ruling family. This is called hereditary succession. In an autocracy, one person has all the power. They can make big choices alone.
