It is an oil painting on canvas made by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. He likely painted it between the years 1797 and 1800. The painting shows a woman reclining on a bed of pillows. She rests on white cloths and looks straight at the person watching her.

This bold gaze is one of the most famous parts of the work. People find it interesting because she looks so unashamed.

Goya actually created two versions of this same woman. One is the nude version, and the other is called La maja vestida.

This second painting shows the woman wearing clothes. In that version, she is a maja, which means a fashionable woman from Madrid. The two paintings are often hung next to each other today. Some people believe the clothed version was meant to hide the nude one. They imagine a cord could pull the clothes away to reveal the woman underneath.

The history of these paintings includes a lot of trouble. Manuel de Godoy, a Prime Minister, likely asked for the art.

He kept them in a private room for his own collection. In 1808, investigators for the Spanish Inquisition found the paintings. They thought the art was indecent and bad for the public. They even brought Godoy and a curator named Don Francisco de Garivay before a tribunal.

Goya had to face questions about why he made such art. He was summoned on a charge of moral depravity.

Luckily, he escaped being punished by explaining his style. He showed that he was following the traditions of great painters. He was emulating works like the Rokeby Venus by Velázquez. The Inquisition accepted that he was following a style used by kings.

This painting has left a mark on many other things. It has inspired many artists, including the painter Manet.
