This painting is important because it showed a change in art styles. At that time, many artists followed a style called Neoclassicism. Ingres moved toward a style called Romanticism instead. This made his work feel more exotic and different. People still look at this painting today to see how art can change.

Ingres used special ways to paint this figure. He used long lines to show curves and beauty. He also used plenty of light to make the shapes look soft.

The woman in the painting has a very small head. Her arms and legs look much longer than they should. Some people think her spine has five extra bones instead of just two or three. Her left arm is even shorter than her right arm. These choices were made to create a certain feeling in the viewer.

This artwork has a very interesting history. Queen Caroline Murat of Naples asked Ingres to make it. She was the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Ingres finished the painting in 1814. He looked at older paintings for ideas. He used the pose of a woman looking over her shoulder from a portrait by Jacques-Louis David. He also drew inspiration from works by artists named Giorgione and Titian. These older works helped him decide how to show the reclining figure.

When the painting first appeared in 1819, people were very upset. They showed harsh criticism toward Ingres. One critic said the painting had no bones, muscle, or life.

They thought the long body was a mistake. Now, we know these distortions were actually on purpose. The Louvre Museum in Paris bought the painting in 1899. It is now part of their collection. Many people visit the museum just to see this specific work.

Many other people have used this painting for their own ideas. In 1964, Martial Raysse made a version that looked like pop art. In 1989, the Guerrilla Girls used it for a famous poster. They put a gorilla mask on the woman to ask questions about women in museums.

Even musicians have used it. The band Manic Street Preachers wrote a song about it in 2009. The painting continues to connect different kinds of art and culture together.
