He made a famous oil painting around 1797. It is called La maja desnuda, or The Naked Maja. The painting shows a woman lying on pillows. She rests on white cloths. She looks straight at the viewer with a bold gaze.

Goya also painted a second version. In that one, the woman wears clothes. This is called La maja vestida. A maja was a fashionable woman from Madrid. These two paintings are often shown together. Some say the clothed one was meant to hide the nude one.

The art caused trouble in Spain. The Spanish Inquisition was a group that checked for improper things. They took the paintings in 1808. They thought the art was indecent. Goya had to explain his work to them. He escaped trouble by showing he followed old traditions.

Today, the paintings are in the Prado museum in Madrid. They have been there since 1901. Many other artists and films have used this work for ideas. It remains a very important piece of art history.
